Our Attorneys
Stephen C. Gaubert graduated Cum Laude from The Southern University Law Center in 2004. During law school, he served on Law Review and was enrolled on the National Dean’s List. In 2000, Stephen received a Bachelors of Science in Behavioral Science from The University of Louisiana at Lafayette. During his college years, Stephen served as a police officer for four years with the University of Louisiana – Lafayette Police Department.
Stephen is admitted to practice in all state courts in Louisiana. He is also admitted to practice before all three federal district courts in Louisiana, as well as the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Stephen was also recently granted admission to practice in front of the Supreme Court of the United States. His primary areas of practice include land-based workers’ compensation accidents, automobile, trucking and boating accidents, maritime/offshore drilling and production rig accidents, social security disability claims, medical malpractice claims, wills, successions, contracts and family law matters.
He currently serves as member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, The Lafayette Bar Association, The American Bar Association, The Louisiana Association for Justice, The American Association for Justice, The American Council of Trial Advocacy, University of Louisiana Alumni Association, The Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, The Coastal Conservation Association and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Stephen volunteers countless hours per year through the Lafayette Parish Bar Association’s Pro Bono program as well as serving on the community service committee of the Lafayette Bar Association. He is also involved in various local charitable organizations such as the Board of Directors for The Boys and Girls Clubs of Acadiana, The March of Dimes, CASA and is a founding member and Vice President of Policy for The 705, which is partnered with The United Way. Stephen is also the co-chairman of a newly formed not-for-profit professional organization, Louisiana Workers Advocates (LWA), the State affiliate member of the National Workplace Law & Advocacy Group (WILG) and is a member of the Advisory Board for Innoviant Pharmacy in Huntington Valley, Pennsylvania.
Stephen is a recent graduate of Leadership Lafayette class XXIII and is listed in Who’s Who of American Lawyers.
Richard E. “Rick” Smith is a 1981 graduate of the University of Southwestern Louisiana, where he received a B.S.B.A., concentrating in the area of Business Communications, with a minor in Business Management. He is a graduate of Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University, where he received his Juris Doctor degree in May, 1991. Rick graduated in the top ten percent of his class, was a member of Law Review and was enrolled on the National Dean’s List. He is listed in the Who’s Who of American Law Students and was the recipient of the American Jurisprudence Award on both Evidence and Marital Property – an honor bestowed on the student with the highest grade in the class.
Prior to entering law school, Rick was an insurance adjuster and supervisor and has traveled worldwide investigating and adjusting various maritime claims. He has been an Adjunct Instructor at Kilgore College in northeast Texas where he taught business and employment law, including workers’ compensation.
Rick practices in the areas of maritime/offshore personal injury and death, workers’ compensation, and automobile, truck and boating accidents. He is a licensed attorney in both Texas and Louisiana and has acted as lead counsel in over 50 civil trials, over 40 criminal trials and hundreds of administrative hearings. Since his practice began, each year Rick has devoted more than 100 hours representing indigent individuals.
Rick is admitted to the practice of law in all Louisiana and Texas Courts. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Louisiana State Bar, State Bar of Texas, Pro Bono College of Texas, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association, Texas Trial Lawyers Association, East Texas Trial Lawyers Association, Lafayette Parish Bar Association, Gregg County Bar Association and Disabled Workers Network. Rick is also listed in Who’s Who of American Lawyers.
